Hanging out in the summer shade

Since 2011 our Steelhead Ranch has hosted over 500 guests in out "Bed and Brew" guest units!  We are "superhosts" on  Airbnb.

We have enjoyed meeting people from all over the globe.... many local guests too.  Our livestock guard dog"Chevas"  greet the guests as they arrive... And our dog 'Charlie' that will play fetch for hours and hours...

Soon the farm cats "katness", "swift" and "special K"  show up for some attention... most people enjoy meeting alpacas up close, even hand feeding them a little bit... while at the barn we introduce them to our ducks and geese.. we have Indian runners, Cayugas, Sweedish Grey, Khaki and a Muscovey  ducks, African grey geese (they sound like Jurassic park!), Toulouse and White Crested Geese... We raise them for duck and goose eggs....In the spring there are many goslings and ducklings for sale!

so... how did we get started in this alpaca adventure??

In 2007 while at Jury duty in Seattle WA, Micki met a very nice lady from an Alpaca farm in the area.  Micki spent a while in the jury pool room discussing alpacas with her. Intrigued, Micki visited her farm the following week. This started several months of research. Micki and Matt and their 2 boys, Cody and Chase, went to as many alpaca farms as we could find. We were completely enamored with the Suri’s. The elegant swing of their fiber, and those bangs!

We started with the purchase of just 5 pregnant females. But with the partnership with DDF in 2009 we were up to 80 at one time!!  We have trimed down a bit and have 15 to 20 alpacas now.

The girls now enjoy summer in the shade of the big trees and the pastures are finally getting a little better established!

Spring means everyone gets shorn , usually end of May or first week in June.  Then cria, baby alpacas!
